Meet Anastasiia, Your Certified Yoga Instructor in Ottawa
Anastasiia is a third-year Health Sciences student at Carleton University. Before coming to Canada, she studied
at a medical university in Ukraine, pursuing a career as a physician. Unfortunately, when the war escalated in Ukraine in
2022, Anastasiia was in her second year of studies. Her father immediately volunteered to protect the country, while her
mother made the difficult decision to relocate to Canada for a safer future.
Despite the war challenges, Anastasiia remained dedicated to medicine and science. Upon arriving in Canada, she quickly
learned English, and after passing the IELTS exam, she secured a job as a fitness instructor at Family Physiotherapy Centres.
In this role, she traveled to various retirement homes and community centers, delivering fitness classes for seniors.
Although it was a challenging transition at first, the job soon became a deeply fulfilling experience for her.
In August 2022, several universities across Canada announced tuition discounts for Ukrainian students. Seizing this
opportunity, Anastasiia successfully enrolled at Carleton University, where she became an active member of both the
Ukrainian Club and the Outdoor Club. Understanding the challenge of studying in English for the first time, she prioritized
her education in her first year. Her dedication paid off, as she later secured internships at Carleton University, working
alongside passionate students in the field of science.
Yoga has always been one of Anastasiia’s passions. She practiced from her teenage years and always asked lots of
questions during yoga sessions. She attended numerous workshops and retreats in Ukraine and often helped yoga
instructors as an assistant. Determined to expand her skills, she pursued a Yoga Teacher Training Certification, inspired by
her previous experience leading fitness classes for seniors. In 2025, she successfully obtained her certification and began
practicing with family and friends to gain more experience. Her interest in human performance and kinesiology led her to
register for a Personal Training Certification, with her exam scheduled for March 2025. Although she had prior experience as
a fitness instructor, she viewed the certification as a valuable step in aligning her expertise with professional standards.
Anastasiia’s future career goal is to pursue a Master’s in Physiotherapy. However, since the only program available in
Ottawa is in French, financial constraints and a lack of family support make this path challenging. As an alternative, she
aims to start her career in human performance and rehabilitation, with hopes of completing a physiotherapy degree or
even medical school in the future. In the meantime, she is eager to apply her growing knowledge of sports, fitness, and yoga
to make a meaningful impact.
To further challenge herself physically, Anastasiia signed up for her first triathlon race in May 2025. She is currently training
diligently, focusing on optimizing her nutrition, improving endurance, and structuring her workouts effectively.
Passionate about promoting yoga and physical activity, Anastasiia is committed to helping others improve their health and
well-being. She finds joy in witnessing progress, maintaining an active lifestyle, and inspiring others to prioritize their
health. Her philosophy is simple: "If we start taking care of ourselves as early as possible, we can live longer, healthier, and
more fulfilling lives."
